VIDEO PREMIERE: The Braided Janes Honor Memory of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and Others in New Single I Can’t Breathe

The Braided Janes are releasing their song, “I Can’t Breathe,” in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. The video was a community collaborative and depicts protest footage captured shortly after Mr. George Floyd’s death, while visually taking the viewer from the past to the present, emphasizing the atrocities, or these modern day lynchings, that continue to happen.

The song honors the memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the many lives senselessly lost due to police brutality, systemic inequity and a broken, apathetic justice system. The Braided Janes lead singer, Jessica Rodriguez, is a gun violence survivor and has first-hand knowledge of this country’s broken judicial system – her mother, Maria Josefina Rodriguez, was murdered and the case was never solved.

Among the nation’s largest cities, Chicago stands out for both its high murder rate and for the number of murders that go unsolved. In recent years, Chicago police have been solving only about 4 of every 10 murders in the city, but police data show the rate is even worse when the victim is African American. تنزيل لعبة روليت

A Washington Post investigation finds that Chicago leads the nation among large cities with unsolved murders, particularly when the victim is a person of color. Similarly, a study by the Chicago National Public Radio affiliate WBEZ, also underscored inequities in solving murder cases indicating that, “when the victim was white, 47% of the cases were solved, for Hispanics, the rate was about 33% and when the victim was African American, it was less than 22%.”

Lead vocalist, Jessica Rodriguez, grew up in the Little Village Community of Chicago and is a fierce advocate for common sense gun reform and immigration reform, LGBTQ issues and social equity.
