The power of love at CumbiaSazo!

We spoke with David ‘Itzi’ Nallah, the sweet, kind and brilliant soul behind one of the most popular dance parties in the city of Chicago – CumbiaSazo – regarding this weekend’s event. Taking place tomorrow at Double Door, the night’s lineup includes Bleepolar and Precolumbian.

What began as a sporadic and nomadic dance party has turned into one of the biggest dance parties of its kind in the US. Taking place every fourth Saturday of the month at Double Door in Wicker Park, Cumbiasazo gets down by showcasing artists making strides in the tropical and global bass movements from around the world. Because of the reach of the event, we’ve enjoyed music by artists like Uproot Andy, Lido Pimienta, Nickodemus, Krudas Cubensi, Sotomayor and so many more.

Along with the music, there are the additional cultural, spiritual, gastronomic and visual layers that encourage further exploration. From vendors sharing their crafts to live painting and even locally-sourced food purveyors, Cumbiasazo is a well-rounded manifesto of the power of love.

Before I get too cheesy, I’ll let David explain what’s going on with this month’s party…

itzi“June 25th’s party will be joyful and emotional. An entire art show is happening on the dance floor with 20+ live artists and visual arts vendors featuring folks like Yvette Mayorga, Hoda Katebi & Afro x Naut. As always it’s a Latinx and people of color-centered showcase, but most of all with creativity and diversity in mind as we work on rehearsing for the world we want to live and dance in,” he says. كيف تربح المال من النت

(You see what I mean about the love! :::heart melting:::)

“Music-wise we’re all over the place but that’s nothing new– kicking off with house music from Caveman and a cumbia feature from Austin TX’s Adzua-Gette, and moving up in the night on both floors thru global/bass and Latinx underground artists like Chicago-bred, Texas-based Ang.g, one of the world’s most significant genderqueer DJs in Philadelphia’s Precolumbian (representing Lima, Peru), and of course Bleepolar coming all the way from Bogotá, Colombia.

The heartbreak of the #Orlando club shootings will be on our minds and hearts but coming together and moving through music on the dance floor and asserting our safe(r) space and selves in the midst of it all will be much-needed, more than ever,” he explains.

RSVP early for a discounted cover and let everyone know. Trust me, this is a beautiful place where music, art, culture and dance come together for us to revel in joy for a few hours. Come to forget your worries, to dance the night away surrounded by amazing energy and let the power of music set your soul free. (I can’t help the cheese, y’all!) More info below!
