Sneak Geek VI: Gorillaz Chuck Taylors

I thought these would be a lot more difficult to cop. Boy, were they not. When I heard the release date set for February 15, I called the shoe-sual Chicago suspects: Legends, Akin, you know. They didn’t have ‘em and weren’t planning on it. Legends hit me with a maybe, but that’s as close as I got that day. The shoes weren’t up on the Gorillaz site or the Converse site which led me to believe I’d have to begin one of those serious hunts. However, thanks to Murdoc and The Gang of Primates that is Gorillaz, my hunt was just a few points and clicks away.

Then I might cast you a spell, look at what came in the mail
A scale and some Arm and Hammer, soul gold grill and some baby mama
Black Cadillac and a pack of pampers
Stack of questions with no answers
Cure for cancer, cure for AIDS

Much hype surrounded the release of these limited edition Gorillaz Converse Chuck Taylors. Gorillaz teamed up with Andre 3000 of Outkast (and later acting) fame and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem for Converse’s Three Artists One Song collaboration project. bwin sport Murdoc, Gorillaz’ frontman, updated fans and those following the developments via Twitter and SoundCloud. Thanks for that.

I eat this shit up when it’s executed properly. The track was set to release earlier this month. Speculation surrounded as to who the two “mystery musicians” would be to accompany Murdoc and gang on the track. Some thought it would be Erykah Badu and 3000, some had no idea at all. I’d been following this story for my musical loving selfish reasons as well as my Sneak Geek instincts, and Andre epically turned in one of the most well-worth-the-wait verses in recent history, eclipsing all other emcees and reducing them to mere mortals. I’ve heard the man spit some of the most ferocious verses over the years, easily cementing his legacy as one of the best to ever grab a mic, but this one. I mean, damn!

The shoes themselves are part of a set of four that Gorillaz released through Converse. I went with the Gorillaz trademark camouflage from their debut album for two reasons. One: so peeps can’t see my feet in sticky situations and two: as a nod to the music, style, and mission Gorillaz stands for in a world lacking style, missions, and musical ingenuity. They’ve always pushed the boundaries creatively, and to put the proverbial cherry on top of the sundae, they’ve thrown two musicians known for their own craft-honing capabilities onto Do Ya Thing, making this week a momentous one for not only sneakerheads, but for music lovers alike. Rejoice!

Chuck Taylors. Need I say more? They are the unofficial shoe sponsor for the rebellion. I’ve dedicated a previous Sneak Geek solely (pun intended) to Chucks. مراهنات كرة القدم اليوم I rocked them at my wedding. I had my best men and little nephews/ring bearers wearing them. قواعد لعب البوكر I give Chucks as gifts. I have a collection of my own. They are the epitome of a classic shoe. Right now, I can say that if all other shoes ceased to exist, I would be OK with Chucks being the only option left. I’m just glad these were as easy to get as they turned out to be. A couple points here, some clicks there, UPS guy shows up at my apartment, and the Sneak Geek is content for now.

Until next time…
