Mole de Mayo 2019 (May 24-26 in Pilsen)

Set along 18th Street in Pilsen, Mole de Mayo is celebrating its 10th Anniversary from Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26, with its iconic mole competition, a spectacular lineup of local and international artists, plenty of lucha libre, and a artisans market. The donation-based event begins at noon each day. Below, I’ve put together a video playlist of some of the artists featured at this year’s festival, as well as a Spotify playlist. I’ll be featuring individual profiles on each of the artists as the fest approaches.

More about Mole de Mayo

Economic Strategies Development Corporation (ESDC) presents its tenth annual Mole de Mayo Festival, the only outdoor mole cook‐off event celebrating Latino culture and Mexican cuisine. Watch a high-caliber of international and local music acts (full list below), walk-through the open air market featuring diverse merchants and artisan vendors and sample a variety of regional or specialty mole dishes from some of Pilsen’s popular eateries and surrounding neighborhoods. Join the frenzied crowd cheer on the high‐flying masked wrestlers (Mexican lucha libre).

Mole de Mayo continues its annual tradition of the mole competition where participants compete for the coveted title and prestigious glazed clay earthenware (cazuela de mole), featuring the winner’s name, by artist Victor M. Montañez. Last year’s winners for the Best Mole was Frida Room, while People’s Choice went to Yvolina’s Tamales.

The festival is set to take place on 18th St. and Ashland Ave. from May 24-26, 2019 in the rich and diverse neighborhood of Pilsen in Chicago.
