LP is the One That We Love

A conversation with LP about: her new single and video for “The One That You Love,” her most recent virtual concert from The Beehive Studios in LA, how she ended up collaborating with Ximena Sariñana and what she feels about her fans.

The audio portion of this conversation will be broadcast on The Ponderers radio show on WLPN-LP Chicago 105.5FM Lumpen Radio on Monday, September 14, 2020 at 6PM CST but you can listen to a tiny preview below. Stream the radio broadcast from anywhere at LumpenRadio.com

LP’s laid back personality adds to the joy of speaking with her one on one. During our conversation we spoke about what she’s been doing since the start of this pandemic as well as her feelings on doing her first virtual concert, one that was so unlike any I’ve personally seen online.

Streaming live from The Beehive Studios in Los Angeles, it was like a breath of fresh air to see LP’s ability to transform a stage, with no audience in attendance, and make it feel so intimate in such a grand way. It boggles the mind. It also speaks highly of her, and her musician’s professionalism and dedication, as it’s no easy task to create such a flawless presentation when it comes to streamed visuals and audio. At this point I’ve seen way too many virtual concerts since March and this one blew them all away.

LP says, “I feel like it needed to be done. I wanted people to feel connected and I hope it did, like we’re all doing something together.”

In the song and video for “The One That You Love” you’re off riding somewhere and you mention that “Only I know where I’m going but I want you to come along,” and there’s something about that sentiment, about letting us in as the listener or the viewer to trust you which creates a bigger connection. Can you tell me more about the song itself?

The song I feel like it just kind of popped out when we were in Mexico. It was just felt very emotional at first and it wasn’t a song I had conceptually like written down already, which is always interesting because I do a lot of times start with a concept, you know? And this time it was just kind of something that came out and felt like it needed to be said at some point.

It was more of a musical melodic thing that just found like… sometimes like the melody dictates the lyric and this was one of those types of songs. I feel like when I put it all together, after the initial emotional like push of it, it felt like something was there. Lyrically it spoke to me as far trying to figure out constantly, always feeling inside like ‘am I doing enough, am I getting enough’ kind of thing. And I hope people can relate to that.

So did being in that Mexican location make your love grow fonder for the country and its people?

Oh, yeah. I mean always, I don’t really need a lot of help with my love growing fonder for Mexico. I just, like, I love it there. I always have, I always will and I always have a great time. It’s just like my happy place. I just love everything about it – the people, the food, the culture, just everything. I think people can tell.

Speaking of Mexican people, you had a collaboration with Ximena Sariñana on Girls Go Wild. How did that come about?

Ahhh, you know we were just like fans of each other and we wanted to write together and weren’t getting a chance to because were were a bit busy touring all the time. But finally we just had the idea to do that and everyone was like ‘yeah’ and it felt like the right thing to do. And as soon as I heard her singing I was like ‘aww sh*t this is good.’

Do you have a name for your fans because they are crazy in love with you…

:Laughs: I mean I just call everybody ‘booboo’ I’m like ‘BOOBOO!’ I just love them, you know. Making them happy is like my favorite thing. I don’t know how it happened but I feel like everybody’s just really kind to me, kind to each other and I couldn’t have asked for a cooler group of people. I think we just keep attracting the same around us. It’d indescribable…

A personal note: ever since my first interview with artist LP it’s been wild to learn more about the heartfelt sentimentality expressed by her loyal fan base. As I explain to her in our most recent conversation, I have never felt more appreciated by an artist’s fans. The fact that they reached out to me to thank me for what I’d written blew my mind and continues to fascinate me. There is absolutely no doubt where this passion comes from as I dig deeper into the powerful and emotional music that accompanies her poetic lyricism. I can confirm through her music, and her fans, that LP is that one that we love.
