Lineup Announced for 22nd Annual Chicago Summerdance

Swing, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Footwork, House and more, June 28–August 25, in Grant Park, Millennium Park and neighborhood parks throughout the City. Full schedule available here.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Event is pleased to announce the lineup for the 22nd Annual Chicago SummerDance, the largest annual outdoor live music and dancing series in the United States. DCASE invites dancers of all abilities to the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park, Taste of Chicago, Millennium Park and Chicago Park District locations throughout the city. SummerDance is the city’s premier dance festival, bringing communities together in a unique, urban dance space all summer long.

The diverse lineup showcases various traditional and modern dance styles from all corners of the globe. The FREE programs in Grant Park take place each Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons from 4 to 7 p.m., on most dates between June 28 and August 24 (see schedule below). In 2018, SummerDance events in Grant Park will be part of each evening of Taste of Chicago, July 11–15 at Buckingham Fountain Plaza, and culminating in Millennium Park on the final weekend on August 25 for the SummerDance Celebration.

The final weekend will feature, a SummerDance Celebration in Millennium Park on Sunday, August 25, featuring a full day of competitions, social dancing and performances from noon to 9 p.m. throughout the park. Highlights include: a House DJ Dance Party, footwork talent showcase and competition and “The Most Versatile Dancer” contest at Cloud Gate, Wrigley Square Dance Village, Circle Dance and Bollywood lessons on the Great Lawn, professional dance performances at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and much more.

NEW for 2018, Dance Downs in the Park ​is a performance series hosted by Shkunna Stewart and The Era Footwork Crew. Dance downs are historic black Chicago talent showcase and today are inspired by modern dance styles like bopping, Chicago footwork, online dance challenges and TV shows like Bring It and America’s Got Talent. SummerDance will feature three dance downs at Hamilton Park Cultural Center on Saturday, July 21, Austin Town Hall Park on Saturday, August 18, and culminating at Cloud Gate in Millennium Park on Sunday, August 25, at the SummerDance Celebration.

The Dance Downs in the Park are part of the Year of Creative Youth programming throughout the City. During SummerDance, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is collaborating with the Chicago Park District Teens in the Park program for which the Year of Creative Youth will be a featured theme for 2018.

SummerDance in the Parks, Wednesdays, July 11–August 22, will feature dancing at seven different neighborhood parks throughout the city including the Ping Tom Memorial Park, Humboldt Park Boathouse, Jackson Park Grove 6B, Willye B. White Park and Portage Park. Unless otherwise noted, dance lessons begin at 6 p.m., with live music and dancing from 7 to 9 p.m. SummerDance in the Parks is presented as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Chicago Park District.

Presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and sponsored by the Chicago Transit Authority, SummerDance brings people of all ages and skill levels together. The long-time home of the event in Grant Park’s Spirit of Music Garden (601 S. Michigan Avenue) features a 4,900-square-foot, open-air dance floor or Chicago Ground Cover is made of 100% recycled material and is part of the City of Chicago’s public art collection. At each location, the series offers free, introductory one-hour dance lessons by professional instructors followed by live music and dancing.
