Last week, Charter Parents United and supporters rallied at Federal Plaza to protest what they say is unequal funding of charter schools by Chicago Public Schools (CPS), in reaction to a moratorium on charters signed by 35 aldermen. The protestors marched to CPS headquarters and delivered 35,000 postcards (one for each charter student) to the office of CPS CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett. The group say that charters give parents more choice than traditional public schools and provide a higher quality education for youth. They say that state legislation creating limits on charters creates long waiting lists. The majority of the protestors were African American and Latino parents, teachers, parents of kids on the waiting list, and middle school and high school students. At the rally, charter school students performed ballet, cheer-leading routines, and marching band songs.
