Album Review: DJ Godfather aka Brian Jeffries’ Detroit Booty Callin EP

What is that stupid buzz saw sound effect you always here in every hip track these days? Well, whatever it is I was almost turned off by the cliché of it on the opening “Like a star pt2” off DJ Godfather, aka Brian Jeffries latest installment via France’s finest, Booty Call Records. On this EP release, aptly titled Detroit Booty Callin, (featuring the work of DJ Godfather, DJ Rashad, Good Money, and Lil Mz 313) we get a slim picking of good old booty shaking music that emphasizes the rear loving, back door entry fiends amongst us. With tracks like “Make The MF” the repetitions of A$$ A$$ A$$ /  Bounce that AZZ AZZ / just doesn’t get old. At no moment are you tired out by the monotonous reference to sexual or innocent dancing.

The more ghetto-tron “Put that thang on me” adds a delicious, metronome of role reversal affirmations and more subtle elusions to sex, whereby the rear isn’t so much emphasized as the action, on the ever classic refrain, “back that up,” it just never gets old. I mean, “I know you wanna freak, so put that thang on me.” It’s all you gotta say. If anybody told me that at a club or even better at a basement house party in the Chi, you better believe I’d concur. The track is the most sophisticated of the small bundle, ebbing into cascading house music vibes by it’s crisp finale.

We come back to the razor blades and chain saw buzzing on the club grinder, “She gonna get down” which may or may not add much to the genre, ghetto-tech, but satisfies non-the-less with it’s very predictable sound. All in all I wouldn’t say this is my favorite production from Booty Call Records (keeping in mind their stellar DJ Roc, Raziek & Cerebral Vortex and Leatherface releases), but on the whole this ain’t that bad. It’s effective, direct, concise and a good workout. Nothing wrong with it per say. It just didn’t get me in a frenzy the way BCR usually does is all. Give it a shot. I’m sure you’ll hear some of these at the next banger and you might even remember the set and this lame article, while leaving blue jean stains on the wall of your college friend’s government cell looking apartment in Urbana.

Yeah, there we go, that’s what this this release reminds me of, one of those college parties I’d soon forget because of too much alcohol and/or weed. Ooops.
