“LOS TIGRES DEL NORTE AT FOLSOM PRISON” Original Soundtrack Album

Press Release

“The Landmark Album From The Legendary Latin Band Widely Hailed As “The Voice of the People” Is The First Live Concert Recording From Folsom Prison Since Johnny Cash’s Historic Release Over 50 Years Ago. The Album Kick’s Off With “La Prision de Folsom (Folsom Prison Blues)” – With support from the Johnny Cash Family

Fonovisa/Universal have released the landmark Latin music album Los Tigres del Norte at Folsom Prison” from one of the most influential and popular Latin bands of all time, with sales of over 40 million albums and a record fifty #1 singles.  Recorded live at the same prison where the legendary Johnny Cash recorded his historic “At Folsom Prison” album fifty years earlier, “Los Tigres del Norte at Folsom Prison” is the first soundtrack album in the legendary band’s five-decade career, as it arrives in conjunction with the Netflix Original Documentary of the same title-globally which premiered Sept 15th.

Although scores of artists sought permission, Los Tigres del Norte was the only act authorized by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to film and record at Folsom for the 50th Anniversary of Johnny Cash’s performance. The “Los Tigres del Norte at Folsom Prison” album features recordings from the band’s two concerts at Folsom (one for the men & one for the women–who are housed in separate facilities).  The band personally selected the songs for the project after reviewing pre-filmed inmate interviews, so that the songs would best connect to the inmates’ personal experiences. The voices of the inmates can also be heard on the album itself between the tracks via excerpts from the documentary—amplifying the connection between the inmates and the songs.

Just as the historic 1968 concert opened with “Folsom Prison Blues,” Los Tigres del Norte likewise took to the prison stage with their own Spanish language rendition of Johnny Cash’ classic song – “La Prision de Folsom (Folsom Prison Blues)”– created with the support of John Carter Cash, his son, and written in collaboration with Ana Cristina Cash, his daughter- in-law.

Two time Oscar winning composer and eighteen-time Latin Grammy winner Gustavo Santaolalla, a legend in his own right, and his long-time producing partner Anibal Kerpel, accompanied the band to Folsom and produced the music for documentary and album.

“When Johnny Cash performed his landmark live concert at Folsom State Prison in 1968, Los Tigres del Norte were new immigrants to this country, with only dreams of being recording stars. At the time, these performers… were separated by a battery of natural barriers. They spoke different languages, worked in different genres, came from different generations, and lived on opposite sides of a historically troubled border. Yet, half a century later, fate would cause their careers to converge, uniting them musically and spiritually on common ground. …A deeper artistic sensibility also binds Cash and Los Tigres, despite those formidable barriers… They are both singing to the same audience, from the same tier of their respective societies…. Not white and brown, north and south, English and Español… [But] the poor and the powerless, the forgotten and unforgiven, the underappreciated and overworked, the outcast and the voiceless.”
