June in Chicago means Pride celebrations will soon be underway for the city’s LGBTQQIA community. For many LGBTQQIA Latinos, there is a color conspicuously absent from the city’s traditional rainbow-themed parties and fests: Brown. Now in it’s fourth year, United Latino Pride has set out to create a week-long Pride event that celebrates the experiences, and addresses the issues, that are unique to LGBTQQIA identified Latinos. لعبت البوكر
“The Latino/a community in Chicago is growing, and with it so is the LGBTQQIA Latina/o community,” says Jessica Carillo, co-chair of the ULP board. “United Latino Pride Week gives us the opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate work that is already being done, while tackling homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia where it counts: in our neighborhoods and in our families.”
When asked about what drives ULP to do this work, ULP organizer Kara Carrell said “We’re drawn to a call for action. We find people who are trying to find community. If we don’t make these spaces ourselves, they aren’t going to be built for us.”
United Latino Pride week is set to kick off this weekend. A fashion show featuring LGBTQQIA Latino designers and models will open ULP week Sunday, June 2nd. تعلم القمار Activist and community leader Rick Garcia will give the keynote address. Other events include a panel discussion on marriage equality, an outdoor dance party, and a trans social for transgender Latinos and their allies. United Latino Pride Week 2013 begins Sunday, June 2nd and runs through Sunday, June 10th. All events through June 9th are free.
