Guatemalan singer/songwriter Gaby Moreno fell in love with the blues when shortly after coming to the U.S. as an adolescent, she heard a busker singing a Koko Taylor tune on the street. Impeccably bilingual, Moreno is blessed with an incredible voice that can glide, soar and just as easily go gravelly, moving from Billie Holiday to Louis Armstrong in one fell vocal swoop. A charming and charismatic artist, Moreno shares with us in this LAMC ’11 interview how her experiences and interests have shaped her lyrics and sound. We’ll be keeping an eye on this talented artist as she matures – she could nicely fill a void in our Latino musical panorama to become a legendary Latina jazz and blues vocalist.
