Dos Santos, Lester Rey, DJ Que.Madre (Chulita Vinyl Club)

On this November 2nd , Dos Santos, Lester Rey, and Que Madre will be honoring Día de Muertos/Día de Ánimas with a homecoming show at Sleeping Village which they are calling “Santa Vida” (sacred life)—as they offer up a common space of celebration, of fellowship, and of partying with a purpose in remembrance of life against the grain of all forms of violence. The night will feature music, local vendors, and live visuals.

After nearly a year-and-a-half of touring in support of their critically-acclaimed album “Logos,” Dos Santos returns home to Chicago for their first club show since December 2018. From dissonant cumbia to jazz-tinged psychedelia, Dos Santos is at the forefront of a new era of Latinx alternative music, deftly bridging pan-Latin and progressive sounds to capture the idealized aesthetics of 21st-century América. On November 2nd the quintet will showcase new material from their forthcoming International Anthem release.

Named one of the top-five Latinx Chicago artists to watch in 2019 by NPR, Boricua neo-soul singer and percussionist Lester Rey has emerged as one of Chicago’s most politically engaged artistic voices. His Caribbean-centric, urbano, and R&B inflected sound is at once silky-smooth and hard-hitting, guaranteed to make you both think and groove hard. He recently linked up with Atlanta-based Nino Augustine to produce “Amigo,” an anthem of diasporic solidarity, spotlighting the shared cultural and sonic heritage between Puerto Rico and Panama. He will be performing with a host of special guests on November 2nd .

Los Angeles-based DJ Que Madre is part of the trail-blazing Chulita Vinyl Club (CVC). Launched in 2014, CVC is a sound selector collective made up of women, gender-non-conforming, non-binary, LGBTQ+ and self-identifying people of color. With chapters across Texas and California, this progressive and inclusive collective aims to provide a safe space for empowerment and togetherness, and to utilize music and vinyl as a form of resistance against the silencing of Latinx voices. Guided by the mantra “El Disco es Cultura,” Que Madre centers Latinx sounds of all genres without borders.

40th Annual Muertos de la Risa

Muertos de la Risa, Juntos We Rise – The 40th Annual Day of the Dead Celebration. Rooted in Mexican tradition, Dia de Muertos serves as a joyous occasion to celebrate life and honor the memory of loved ones that have passed away.

Community + Tradition – Join us for the longest-running Dia de Muertos celebration in the city. We invite you to an evening of spectacle and ancestral remembrance. There will be face painting, art activities, performances, street-level ofrendas and a community procession. Bring your walking shoes, your muertos inspired attire, and/or your own mobile ofrenda— fill the neighborhood with joy and laughter.

Love our Community + Honor our ancestors – In a city that is sometimes too hostile, we emphasize support and solidarity of marginalized communities. To reach success they must rise above systematic challenges, violence and oppressive expectations. We are uniting communities and providing a space to honor the memory of our ancestors and friends gone too soon. Together we can create a brighter future for our communities and young people. Juntos we rise.
