After playing Cuatro over the years for many artists including Ricky Martin, this is Christian Nieves’ time to shine as a solo artist. In his first production, “Mi Monte”, Christian picks up on many musical experiences and influences from his artistic journeys.
The project focuses on two main themes musically, first is the instrumental fusion found on the recording, including rhythms from Brazil, Spain, Cuba, Ecuador and his native Puerto Rico. The second is an emphasis on Folkloric music of his Puerto Rican roots. He feels it necessary to focus on the traditional music of his birthplace, especially in introducing it to a younger audience in the hopes of preserving the music. This idea is realized with his involvement in ‘The Trovaton Project’, where Trovadores and Reggaeton singers went head to head in a recording session which featured Christian on the Cuatro.
In all reality Christian Nieves is arguably the most exciting Puerto Rican Cuatro player of his generation. He is analogous as the “Michael Jordan or Giovanni Hidalgo” of the Cuatro.
After having thrilled capacity sold-out audiences at the Chicago Cuatro Festival he returns to Chicago for a special intimate engagement on Thursday, August 26th 2010 8pm at Rumba Nightclub 351 W. Hubbard. His new quintet which features drum, electric bass, congas, acoustic/electric guitar and Christian’s mesmerizing Cuatro will be danceable, virtuosic, contemporary, and traditional.
