Marisol La Brava and A Flor De Piel Release La Llorona

Although 2020 has proven to be a year of change around the world, Marisol La Brava and A Flor De Piel have prevailed in their mission to share their music. After an almost daily virtual performance schedule that lasted months into the pandemic, and releasing singles like “Mental Lockdown,” they have now released their version of the classic song, “La Llorona.”

La Llorona is a traditional son from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region in central Mexico inspired by the legendary character of “La llorona” (the weeping woman) who’s legend is tightly woven into Mexican lore. Legend has it La llorona, brokenhearted by the love of her life after he abandoned her and their children for a new lover, lost in her pain and rage, drowned her children in a nearby river only to regret it instantly upon realizing what she had done. As penance for her heinous crime her soul was condemned to wander near rivers weeping for her lost children for eternity.

Marisol La Brava’s interpretation of this iconic song is as haunting as its namesake legend. She masterfully conveys feelings of heartache, deep sorrow and torment, with a wistful and melodious voice. Marisol La Brava & A Flor de Piel’s rendition of this classic borrows from traditional sounds including the ayoyotes (ankle rattles used in traditional Aztec dance) and blends in electronic instruments to produce a perfect marriage between traditional folk and contemporary sounds. This track transports listeners to a river where one can almost visualize a sorrowful soul aimlessly wandering hoping to find peace.
