The chicano sound artisans uniquely crafting together festive, outspoken and traditional Mexican rhythms with emerging sounds from their communities in Los Angeles, Las Cafeteras, have been on a heavy schedule, traveling the world sharing their music and are set to end their whirlwind travels this coming Friday, Nov. 22 with a performance at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. The event includes guests (((SONORAMA))) and DJ Rebel Betty.
Join Las Cafeteras journey through this video playlist that showcases the group’s evolving sounds. It includes their latest video release shared earlier this year, a heart-warming cover of the 1961 single, “Angel Baby” by Rosy Hamlin and The Originals as well as a recap video of their 2011 visit through Chicago. Dang, it’s been almost a decade!
Welcome home, Cafeteras!
“2019 has been a wild ride for Las Cafeteras. From touring around the Polar Vortex to performing at festivals in Australia and New Zealand to the stages of Bonnaroo and the Hollywood Bowl, Las Cafeteras close out the year in one of their favorite cities, Chicago.
Las Cafeteras fuse traditional Afro-Mexican rhythms with the vibrant sounds of Los Angeles, telling modern-day stories of Latinx, immigrant & Native lives. Featuring requinto and jaranas styles from Veracruz, Mexico, the band remixes roots music, with their exuberant blend of zapateado stomp dancing, hip-hop and punk rock.
With songs like, “If I Was President,” which was released on the inauguration day of our 45th, and declarations such as “Yo No Creo En Fronteras” (“We do not believe in borders”), the band celebrates differences in a tense political climate that embraces hegemony.
“As children of immigrants and as a Chicanx artist, we have been able to weave our stories of migration, love and the belief that you can NOT have a movement without MOVEMENT, so our job is to get everyone up and dancing.”Denise Carlos, singer with Las Cafeteras
Las Cafeteras bring their message of “Unity on the Dancefloor” to Chicago’s Lincoln Hall on Friday, November 22nd. Tickets are on sale now (https://lh-st.com/shows/11-22-2019-las-cafeteras).”
