U.S. American reggae singer and orthodox Jew, Matisyahu, born Matthew Miller in New York in the Hebrew calendar year 5740, brings his Kosher Reggae to Chicago performing with Toots & the Maytals, and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. In 2004 “Shake Off the Dust… Arise” saw the dawn of the prophetic rapper. “Youth” also rose to fame around the world, while Matisyahu claimed his heart as hungry as Bob Marley. Matisyaho teams up with a new band, Dub Trio, who Miller bumped into the group in Austin and shortly after played an improve set with them in Brooklyn. Famous for his hip-hop rock, reggae beat box, Matisyahu now accompanied by the trio’s guitar, bass, and drums promises to be a treat, drizzled with hazzan prayer songs.
Since 1963 Toots & the Maytals, originally The Maytals, have been producing records and rock steady grooves to blaze and groove to. Jamaican frontman, Frederich “Toots” Hibbert, grew up to gospel church choirs as the youngest of 7 children, and moved to Kingston at a young age. Fast forward a couple decades through the bands break up and The Maytals persistent productions, our generation might best me familiar with the re-recorded versions of their earliest hits on, True Love, a compilation including the likes of Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, No Doubt, Ben Harper and The Roots, winning best reggae album of 2005. The next year, Toots wound brush fame with the acclaimed rasta hit, Radiodread, a unique tribute album to Radiohead’s OK Computer, a song-for-song cover/makover in dub, ska and reggae splendor.
WIllie Nelson’s 22 year old son, Lukas Nelson also opens with his band Promise of the Real. This star studded night of raggae roots and rolling jams will go down in history. Tickets are available at Clubtix.com.
