The 5-Step Breathing Exercise to Master

I used to be a hot-headed, run-off-at-the-mouth girl for years. My temper was horrible. I would even get on my own nerves! I’d looked for just about anything to take the edge off. In an effort to promote healthy living, I’m going to share my breathing relaxation technique with you. Are you ready? Are you sure you’re ready? No, seriously, are you sure you want to learn breathing steps for relaxation? Stop yelling at your computer, I can’t hear you anyway! Let’s begin. Sorry, no slouching allowed. Sit up straight, posture is key!

Step 1: Find your breath.
Zone out everything around you and pay attention to your breathing.

Step 2: Let out a super sigh.
I don’t mean a sloppy one either! Once you’ve inhaled, let out a full sigh through your partially opened mouth. Be sure you empty your lungs and suck in that gut to get out every last bit.

Step 3: Inhale slooooowly.

Step 4: Refill yourself with fresh oxygen.
Relax your body, piece by piece, in this order: face, shoulders, chest, and down to your toes.

Step 5: Be mindful of your efforts.
You are expelling the old and welcoming the new. Now, repeat steps 1 through 4. You will begin to feel a sense of relaxation.

Repeat as often as needed until you stop seeing red. Anytime, any place! It doesn’t matter where you do it, odds are nobody is watching. If someone is giving you funny glances, just ask them to join you! Perhaps you’ll make a new stress-free friend! I can tell you from my own experience (and I used to be a super skeptic) that just by learning proper breathing techniques I have improved my focus, relaxed, and even lost weight. Relaxing breathing techniques are another brick laid in the pathway towards healthy living. Some stress is good for you but an abundance of it can lead to mental and physical health issues. Don’t deprive yourself of a healthy mind and body. Relax and breathe, my friends.
