In a desolate stretch of farm country, a young couple attempts to leave their complicated past behind in hopes of starting a new life. Andrew (Michael Kelly, The Adjustment Bureau) and Claire (Jicky Schnee, All Good Things) find themselves far from their roots, and decide to move to an old schoolhouse in a depopulated town inhabited by an elderly widow and her blind niece, Maria (Ana Asensio, Zenith). While the local media reports on an approaching solar eclipse, their arrival sets off an elusive chain of events that will alter the lives of everyone around them. This remote locale exacerbates their individual feelings of disconnection and isolation, making Claire more withdrawn while developing an unsettling interest in Maria. When repressed memories return that had not been resolved, Andrew and Claire are finally forced to confront their darkest truths.
The Afterlight is a minimalist tone poem which uses an expressive landscape to amplify the emotions of its characters while evoking the heartache of loss and alienation with a tragic force.
