Starlicker and Tatsuya Nakatani

May 23, 2011 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Comprised of Rob Mazurek (cornet), John Herndon (percussion), and Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone), Starlicker is deeply rooted in the Chicago and international avant-garde, jazz and post rock scenes. They expel sound with pervading energy and other-worldly delicacy. Rob Mazurek leads, composes for and performs with the critically acclaimed Exploding Star Orchestra, Chicago Underground, São Paulo Underground and Rob Mazurek’s Sound Is Quintet.

Originally from Osaka, Japan, contemporary percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani has brought his genre-defying sound to concerts around the world. His music is based in improvised/experimental music, jazz and rock, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. Utilizing the drum set, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls and metal objects, Nakatani creates his own unique instrumentation.

The program will consist of two sets, with a 10 minute intermission. The first will be a 45 minute set by Tatsuya Nakatani, followed by a 60 minute set by Starlicker.
