SAIC’s Fashion Resource Center (FRC) presents Cuban-born, New York-based fashion designer Isabel Toledo and fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo. Isabel, who has been designing for 25 years, is known in fashion circles as a “designer’s designer” for her wit and eloquent sense of pattern, fit and fabric. She received the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Fashion Design in 2005, and is fortunate to count First Lady Michelle Obama as one of her clients. Isabel will present thoughts on her distinct flair for pattern cutting and garment construction.
Ruben is a painter, sculptor, illustrator, fashion chronicler and critic whose work is often described as whimsical and surrealistic. He has been featured on the covers of classic books like Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, fashion and news magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and The New York Times, and in exhibitions and galleries around the world. He will discuss his sense of design in both commercial and non-commercial arenas. \
