Join us for a very special evening with the Roy McGrath Quintet.
The ensemble will perform a series of original compositions that showcase Afro-Caribbean jazz with recitatives of poetry from acclaimed Puerto Rican poet and activist Julia de Burgos.
“Julia al Son de Jazz” was commissioned last year by the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center and performed at the park named after Julia de Burgos on Chicago’s new urban trail, The 606. Sabor a Café is proud to present this new work for only its second time.
Roy McGrath is a Puerto Rico-born saxophonist and a graduate of Northwestern University’s Beinen School of Music, where he studied with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra’s Victor Goines. In addition to performing in countless salsa, Latin jazz and funk ensembles, he leads the Roy McGrath Quartet, who recently returned from a month-long tour of Mexico supporting their CD “Martha”, which they presented for the first time at a CD release party at Sabor a Café in 2014.
The Roy McGrath Quintet is: Roy McGrath, tenor sax; Jean Christophe Leroy, drums; James Wenzel, bass, Bill Cessna, piano; and Joe Rendon, congas.
