An idea for you today about Redmoon Theater’s new “promenade theater”-style show. Redmoon has created a brand new, original production is called Bellboys, Bears and Baggage, opening May 18 in its massive, 18,000-square-foot Pilsen headquarters. Here are some numbers to illustrate what sort of show this will be:
15 rooms. Redmoon is building rooms of various size throughout its cavernous 18,000-square-foot headquarters, each with its own lighting and a vintage record player setting a unique tone.
35-40 performers overall
8 Bellboys, who serve as guides/chaperones for the audience
8 Bears, who serve as agents of chaos
12 masked actors, portraying two main characters throughout the various scenes
· One room featuring a forest, pond and boat
· A new mobile device, the “Piano Bar,” that’s part Bear-playing-piano and part functional bar, which will roam the space
The audience will be free to roam throughout a series of scenes, in different rooms, that are performed on loop, each loosely inspired by Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and the themes of regret and emotional baggage therein. Redmoon riffs on the enigmatic stage direction, “Exit, pursed by a bear.” It’s an intricately choreographed evening of immersive theater unlike anything mounted in Chicago in recent memory.
