For 45 years, the Chicago International Film Festival has brought you the brightest and boldest new films and filmmakers—from Slumdog Millionaire and Reservoir Dogs to Scorsese, Fassbinder, Wenders, and Herzog—first. Did you chat with The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky or listen to Kevin Smith crack the audience up for an hour after Zack and Miri Make a Porno? Maybe you saw Viggo Mortensen, or Jada Pinkett Smith at her directorial debut? This year you can expect to see the most anticipated films and stars (Uma Thurman, Martin Landau, and Willem Dafoe to name a few), but the real fun is pushing your boundaries and discovering something new.
Now in its fifth decade, Cinema/Chicago is dedicated to promoting expression and communication through the universal language of film. Every fall, the Chicago International Film Festival presents, a two-week extravaganza of stars, parties, and hundreds of films and filmmakers from more than 40 countries around the world.
As parole officer Jack Mabry (Oscar® winner Robert De Niro) counts the days toward a quiet retirement, he is asked to review the case of Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Oscar® nominee Edward Norton), in prison for covering up the murder of his grandparents with a fire. Now eligible for early release, Stone needs to convince Jack he has reformed, but his attempts to influence the older man’s decision have profound and unexpected consequences for them both. Stone skillfully weaves together the parallel journeys of two men grappling with dark impulses as the line between lawman and lawbreaker becomes precariously thin. Golden Globe® winner Frances Conroy also stars as Madylyn, Jack’s devout, long-suffering spouse, while Milla Jovovich delivers a startlingly raw, breakout performance as the sexy, casually amoral woman both men desire.
