Oaxacan Alebrije Painting Class (BYOB)

November 25, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Alebrije artist Carlos Orozco is returning to Chicago from Oaxaca and will be teaching more alebrije painting classes! Carlos directs the indigenous artists’ collective Puech Ikots ( in Oaxaca, Mexico and is a skilled wood carver and painter who works in the tradition of alebrijes. Alebrijes are the colorful carved wooden animals that are well-known in Mexican folk art.

In this class, Carlos will teach the history and significance of the alebrije in Oaxacan culture. He will demonstrate the technique for wood carving and explain the process of creating alebrijes. He will also discuss the Puech Ikots fair trade artists’ collective and its mission to provide a path to economic autonomy for indigenous artists in the Oaxacan sierra.

All participants will receive their own pre-carved, unpainted alebrije to paint. Several different alebrije animals will be available and you will get to choose the one you like best! There will be two sizes, small (approx. 3 inches tall) and large (approx. 4-5 inches tall, and thicker). All alebrijes for this class were individually hand-carved from tropical copal wood by the members of the Puech Ikots collective especially for this event, and brought to Chicago from Oaxaca by Carlos. With Carlos’s one-on-one guidance you will create a unique alebrije in your own personal style to take home!

This event is BYOB so please feel free to bring a beverage to enjoy. Our wonderful host space, La Catrina Cafe, will have food available for purchase. All paint and necessary materials will be provided. Spaces are limited!

The proceeds from this class will be re-invested in the artists’ collective in Oaxaca. Puech Ikots is fiscally sponsored in the USA by Cuentos Foundation. This event is co-hosted by Cultura in Pilsen (
