Ever since Alejandro Amenábar blazed the trail in 1996 with his successful first work, Tesis, Spain has produced important horror and mystery films. Many of these have won prizes and received critical acclaim internationally; on top of being good examples of the important leap Spain has made breaking into a genre that has been little-valued Spain until very recently. Alejandro Amenábar has played a leading role in this change, as a fantastic director with a large following whose thrillers have influenced a whole generation of directors. All of which is plenty reason for giving him special attention in this cycle by including three of his works.
