As we learn today the sad news of the murals of casa Aztlan being painted over we the community are feeling as if we are mourning. These are the actions and consequences of gentrification as the new colonization of our communities and our culture and history being erased. Many of our children learned there about Mexican culture and several organizations made Casa Aztlan their home to help immigrants or just to have meetings and exchange ideas. The history of our Chicanas of La 18 was made there. Today we ask you to join us on a vigil to mourn our past, to say good bye to a beloved place that we considered an important remark in our dear PIlsen. Let’s not forget that this is all for profit. History is more important than profit. Bring candles, flowers, chalk, copal, incense, etc. Let’s show them how we do it in the Barrio. They can erase our murals but they cannot erase our souls and spirits.
