This extraordinary directorial debut yokes the socially conscious poignancy of De Sica’s classic UMBERTO D with a wilder Latino streak of quirky religious allegory and black humor. After working for 34 years as an archivist at a small insurance company, prim 75-year-old Martha is unceremoniously replaced by a computer and a younger, bustier new employee named Eva. Thus begins the speedy dissolution of Martha’s well-ordered existence, its tragic course undercut by flashes of deadpan humor, including a Last Supper composed of donuts, and the odd rapport that develops between Martha and her nemesis Eva, who may represent her final salvation…or the Angel of Death. In Spanish with English subtitles. HDCAM video. (MR)
