Amala is a preferred food of many orishas (deities of the Santeria). Drumming and singing is a primary form of worship, as well as a centerpiece in secular life in Cuba. Jazz con Amala is comprised of musicians who represent these two ingredients.
Joining together the rhythm section and structure of folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms and songs (from the traditions of Santeria and Rumba) with jazz instruments and solo improvisational ideas that respect the cultures and styles involved, give listeners of this superb group a meaningful and entertaining experience.
Joe Rendon, Jean-Christophe Leroy and Janet Cramer are Percussionists who bring the Afro-Cuban Folklore, along with much Experience in the jazz/pop world. Ben Lewis (keys) and Brett Benteller (bass) bring the jazz element to the group along with a great sensitivity and knowledge of Afro-Cuban music.
Jazz con Amala rides the clave rhythm with afro-cuban folkloric and latin jazz starndards that illustrate the rich vibrancy of ”Jazz con Clave” here in Chicago.
