Every house has a door is a recently formed company by Lin Hixson and Matthew Goulish (both formerly of
Goat Island) to create project-specific collaborations with invited guests. Their first Chicago performance, Let
us think of these things always. Let us speak of them never. is a multi-faceted dance-theater work about
utopian beliefs, created with two performers from Chicago – Goulish and Stephen Fiehn – and two from
Zagreb, Croatia — Selma Banich and Mislav Cavajda. This innovative performance is co-comissioned by the
MCA and was developed in part through a creative residency at the MCA Stage, where it is presented on
February 9-13, 2011.
Under the direction of Hixson, the performers seek common ground between their experiences in America
and Croatia. They find it through a shared reference, the films of Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman
along with his influence on Yugoslavian filmmaker Dušan Makavejev. A historic lecture Makavejev delivered
at Harvard University and his erotic and seminal film Sweet Movie (1974) are explored. Using the film – the
artists view Sweet Movie on laptop computers with the screens obscured from audience – and texts as the
basis of their choreography; a delicate, sometimes funny balance is found as they engage with the histories
of utopianism and revulsion/revolt in an unjust world.
