The Grammy Award-winning, Chicago-based eighth blackbird returns to the MCA Stage with a two-part concert
series, PowerFUL/LESS, that presents the cases for and against Igor Stravinsky’s controversial claim that “music
is, by its very nature, essentially powerless to express anything at all.” The first concert, PowerFUL, on Saturday,
January 22, features passionate and politically charged works by American composers Frederic Rzewski, John
Corigliano, and John Luther Adams.
The PowerFUL concert is inspired by a quote by the novelist Chinua Achebe — “Art for art’s sake is just another
piece of deodorized dogshit” — written as a rebuttal to Igor Stravinsky’s claim about music. The program is
designed to confront listeners with passionate musical responses to contemporary political issues by three very
different American composers.
