For its second in a series of Christmas Around the World concerts, the Chicago Chamber Choir (CCC), a skilled choral ensemble of 40 singers under the artistic direction of Timm Adams, performs a celebratory program, “Canciones de Navidad: A Spanish Christmas.” Performances take place December 12 in Evanston and December 16 in Lincoln Park.
In December, CCC will present the second set of concerts in our “Christmas Around the World” series. Spanning 400 years of Spanish music, this evocative program will feature the sounds and rhythms of Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Argentina, including holiday gems in Spanish, Latin, and English. The centerpiece of the program is Conrad Susa’s “Carols and Lullabies” for chorus, guitar, harp, and marimba. “A la Nanita Nana,” “Riu, Riu, Chiu,” and “Carol of the Birds” are among the selections.
The holiday program features a range of repertoire including popular traditional works, such as O Magnum Mysterium by Tomas Luis de Victoria, the anonymous Riu Riu Chiu: El Lobo Rabioso, Carol of the Birds and more. And in an exploration of “regional” repertoire, a section of the program entitled “Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest” by Conrad Susa—scored for chorus, guitar, harp and marimba—highlights Catalonian, Puerto Rican, Castilian and Mexican songs as well as those from other parts of the Spanish-speaking world.
