Black Girl Interrupted

March 20, 2016 @ 8:00 pm

The Who…
Sydney Charles is an interesting hybrid of a performer. She began her journey at a young age with ballet lessons, which soon morphed into being more interested in the music she heard and thereby developing her interest in playing piano. A singer since the age of 4, she dedicated her time to church choirs and community choirs, and All-City Youth Choir of Chicago. In high school, she was able to cultivate her love for music by being in a part of Kenwood Academy Concert Choir under the direction of Kenneth M. Lennon. However, she was persuaded to not pursue a career in music and instead chose a career path more “practical”. However, your passion and your destiny always follow you and will not let you go until you fulfill your purpose.

The What…
A catharsis project – A Healing for the Soul – An attempt to shed light on the difficult reality of mental illness in the Black community and how the performing arts can assist in being an outlet and a tool to reach others and encourage them to speak out about their own struggles. To build each other up; to create a safe space, to be whole.

The When…
This experience was originally designed to be a one night event. However, after seeing the increase in issues within close social circles and within the community, it was decided that the possible progress and greatness that this concert could not be hindered. It can be a movement – it can be a shift in the atmosphere. Coming to you March 20, 2016.

The Where…
Chicago, Illinois. Sydney’s birth place and her home. The city that has shaped her into who she is; good and bad. There was no logical reason for her to start this journey anywhere but here first.

The How…
By the grace of God and with the support of amazing friends, family, and theater community. Most importantly, driven by the need for mental health to be brought to the light outweighing insecurities and fears and doing what has to be done for the sake of her community and herself.

March 20th, 2016. We know where you’d like to and where you should be.

$10 tickets before March 1st (early bird gets the discount)
