The A JOYFUL PASSAGE 2016 series playfully pushes Chicago’s “Safe Passage” program to song-filled, artistic heights unseen. The 1st of three art-filled public events, our HUMBOLDT PARK SERENADE praises everyday neighborhood gems. We aim to call attention to each other and the many positive things that are part of our community.
Artists have created BICYCLE ANIMATIONS that serenade the park, and you are the PROJECTIONIST! Praise and honor BISON, SNAIL, and other often unseen sculptures with new eyes. Visit our bicycle-powered ZOETROPE. Play slow-mo SNAIL-TAG, and STAMPEDE toward the historic stables alongside giant hobby horses. Become a part of our LIGHT and SHADOW prairie play. Come early and make a sing-a-long FISH PUPPET to accompany your stroll through the park! (fish-making begins at 7 pm.)
Chime in with the HUMBOLDT PARK NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN’S CHOIR, who will kick off the evening with a participatory performance at 7:30 pm. Then STROLL the park, CREATE an ODE to your favorite spot, and UNCOVER hidden park histories.
We’ll close the evening at 9:00 pm at the BOATHOUSE by serenading one of Humboldt Park’s heros, MAGGIE MARTINEZ, with an ORIGINAL song, created by her FRIENDS and FANS, and accompanied by the Lowell Elementary School Band.
Opera-Matic believes by walking and singing and lighting up the streets of our neighborhood, we create new paths and connections between our neighbors.
A JOYFUL PASSAGE: Series Framework:
Opera-Matic believes a serenade can do a lot. UNSUNG neighborhood heroes may be sung into “HERO-DOM.” Former landmarks may be sung back into public MEMORY. Songs may identify the UNIQUENESS of ordinary objects and reveal HIDDEN histories. By activating outdoor public spaces through CREATIVE PLACE-MAKING, we create opportunities for joyful SHARED experiences through playful civic action, inviting people to know one another in new ways.
Opera-matic will present two additional public serenades at in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhoods:
August 27th Simons Park Playground
November 12th Mozart Park Ball Field
