2015 MEChA National Conference Theme
“Lost to Our Land, Education is Our Stand”
The history of martyrdom within the Chican@ movement, has shown the extent in which people have and continue to sacrifice for its progression. M.E.Ch.A was established for the spiritual, economic, and socio-political liberation of our people through education.
It is important to acknowledge that the western education system was built for the promotion of western ideals at the cost of indigenous knowledge to subjugate and oppress people of color. The westernization of education has embedded both segregation and deculturalization in the core of its teaching methods by misappropriating and herding the masses (with) the progression of white heteropatriachy and other forms of oppression. Indigenous knowledge has been the foundation in the decolonial struggle.
Considering that the history of M.E.Ch.A is rooted in a culturally competent, historically accurate, and critically conscious education, we must recognize our first point of revitalization of the movement and the seventh point of taking back Chican@ Studies as stated in the “Goals and Objectives” of the Philosophy of M.E.Ch.A. It has been almost 50 years since the inception of M.E.Ch.A; thus, we can no longer continue ignoring these realities.
As MEChistAs, it is our duty to reclaim our movement in order to sow the seeds of education for the people’s future in the quest for our own truth that will lead us towards liberation.
