Lady Midnight at Simones

Songstress, performance artist and healer, Lady Midnight, brings a dose of medicinal vibes to Simone’s on Saturday, Feb. 24. From Mexico City and arriving to us through the North Star State, this artist’s music has been called “astro-pop“. Defying traditional labels, Lady Midnight’s style is soulful, deep, loungey, eclectic, r&b-ish, cosmic and more.

The inspiration in Lady Midnight’s recording and performances come from her Afro and Indigenous roots, descending from a long line of healers and musicians. Marrying the two sides of her life has become her mission in the work she has produced since transforming herself into a solo artist two years ago. Her recent work has come with the participation and support of Minneapolis based hip hop producer Mike the Martyr. Music can be healing and this artist intends for it to be that way.

Priding herself as the offspring of musicians, she is the daughter of Minnesota’s first salsa band, “Sabroson”. Her musical roots also include working with underground electro-experimental and Afro-Cuban bands. Her heritage is forged in her rise as an activist and educator speaking on social and individual traumas. The healing power of her music has caught the attention of media and radio alike, including heavy rotation of her track “Wax Line” on NPR’s The Progressive Underground.

Adriana Rimpell, aka Lady Midnight, lives the titles of teacher and defender of human rights. Standing up for underrepresented groups, especially in the arts. Devoted to her music and community, Adriana has had the opportunity to record with artists like Bon Iver, P.O.S. and Brother Ali and has worked as an arts instructor, spoken on art panels, and worked within projects that have supported communities of color, the LGBTQ communities and young people.

Lady Midnight has especially spoken on behalf of the impact the arts have on young people and has contributed her efforts to national research projects with The Whitney Museum, The Walker Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. She is also teaches songwriting and composition to homeless youth through the Kulture Klub Collaborative and is the Curatorial Assistant at Intermedia Arts, an internationally recognized multidisciplinary / multicultural art center.

Lady Midnight (Adriana RImpel) is accompanied this weekend at Simone’s by DJ Just Nine, Minneapolis turntablist and beatmaker, whom is both her DJ and guest performer for a set of his own this Saturday.

They are joined by Chicago reggae DJ legend Papa G for a special 3 hour set and Chicago’s own Freddy Phatz, treatin’ the crowd to an old school dj hip hop set. This is a unique experience and it’s happening at Simone’s this Saturday, Feb. 24, at 9:00 p.m. Events like this don’t happen everyday so now you know.
