It was a truly a thrill to interview Steve Berlin, renowned producer and member of the iconic Latino group, Los Lobos, who gave us his take on the group’s thirty year path. Los Lobos’ 1987 super hit “La Bamba” brought Latino sounds to the musical mainstream, helping to usher in a new era of Latino music. Their genuine and graceful eclecticism, drawing from rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues and traditional Mexican music, were an early model of what alt Latino could become – in part, thanks to them, the generations of musicians that followed have had more freedom to express their own Latino-rooted sounds in the context of rock, reggae, hiphop and other contemporary genres.
